The short version
- Keep your PAN, Aadhaar and a bank account in your own name ready.
- Choose one skill and a specific niche, and make 3–5 sample projects.
- Open one account on Fiverr or Upwork with your real name, matching your PAN.
- Get paid through Payoneer, PayPal or Upwork's direct bank payout, and set the right purpose code so each payment counts as an export.
- Keep your e-FIRAs, register for GST once you cross ₹20 lakh, and file your income tax return every year.
1. What you need before you start
- PAN and Aadhaar. Platforms, Payoneer, PayPal and your bank verify your identity, and your PAN links your freelance income to your tax return. Use the same name everywhere.
- A savings or current account in your own name that accepts foreign inward remittances. Most major banks do.
- You must be 18 or older. Fiverr requires it to withdraw earnings, and the other platforms have similar rules.
- A laptop and reliable internet, with a mobile hotspot as backup.
- Clear written English. Most clients are in the US, UK, Europe and Australia.
2. Choose a skill and a niche
India has one of the largest freelance workforces on Fiverr and Upwork, so "web developer" or "graphic designer" alone gets lost. Pick one skill and narrow it to a niche clients search for:
| Skill | Niche examples |
|---|---|
| Web and app development | Shopify speed fixes, WordPress for dentists, React dashboards, API integrations |
| Design | SaaS landing pages, pitch decks, Amazon product images, YouTube thumbnails |
| Writing | B2B SaaS blog posts, technical documentation, email sequences |
| Marketing | Local SEO for US businesses, Google Ads for e-commerce, LinkedIn content |
| Data and AI work | Spreadsheet automation, data cleaning, dashboards, chatbot setup |
A niche lets you charge more and makes your profile easier to find. Free tutorials, official documentation and government platforms such as SWAYAM are enough to learn most of these skills.
3. Build proof of your work
Clients hire from samples. Before opening any account, make three to five sample projects in your niche: redesign a real company's landing page, build a small app and deploy it, or write two articles for a target industry. Put them on GitHub, Behance, Dribbble or your own site.
4. Fiverr, Upwork or direct clients?
| Fiverr | Upwork | Direct clients | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How you get work | Buyers find your gig and order | You send proposals to job posts | LinkedIn, referrals, cold outreach |
| Platform fee | 20% of every order | Variable 0–15%, often about 10% | None |
| Cost to start | Free to list gigs | Connects to apply, $0.15 each | Free |
| Payment protection | Yes | Yes | Only what you agree with the client |
Many Indian freelancers use a marketplace for the first reviews and move to direct clients over time, often found through LinkedIn. See your real take-home with the Fiverr fee calculator and the Upwork fee calculator, and use the free invoice generator for direct clients.
5. Set up your account the right way
- Use your real name and photo, exactly as on your PAN. Identity checks fail when names don't match, and a failed check can lock your earnings.
- Open only one account per platform. Buying, renting or sharing accounts gets them permanently banned.
- Lead with your niche in the title, such as "Shopify developer for fashion brands: speed and conversion fixes".
- Show samples and results, not just a list of tools.
- Mention your overlap hours. India is 9.5 to 10.5 hours ahead of the US East Coast; clients like knowing when you're online.
6. Win your first client
- Reply fast, including in the evening when US clients are awake.
- On Upwork, apply to small, recent jobs in your niche and write each proposal for that client. Generic proposals waste Connects.
- On Fiverr, use the words buyers search for in your title, tags and description.
- Don't compete only on price. A clear niche, samples and fast replies win against cheaper sellers.
- Over-deliver on the first orders to earn strong reviews.
The hourly rate calculator works out the rate you need in rupees after platform fees, payout costs and unpaid time.
7. Get paid in India
| Route | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Upwork → Direct to Local Bank | $0.99 per withdrawal | Arrives in rupees. Upwork applies its own exchange rate |
| Upwork or Fiverr → Payoneer → bank | Upwork $2 or Fiverr $3, then up to about 2% in conversion | Payoneer doesn't charge for marketplace payments. Free e-FIRA |
| Fiverr → PayPal | $0 from Fiverr, then PayPal's 3.0% conversion | Fast, but conversion costs more than Payoneer |
| Direct client → PayPal | 4.40% + fixed fee, plus 3.0% conversion | The most expensive way to receive a direct payment |
| Direct client → Payoneer receiving account | About 1% by bank transfer | Then up to about 2% to your bank |
Wise doesn't give individuals in India account details for receiving money; only Wise Business can receive. Payoneer vs Wise vs PayPal shows what reaches your bank from each service.
8. e-FIRA and purpose codes
Every foreign payment into an Indian bank carries an RBI purpose code, and your bank or payment service issues a FIRA (Foreign Inward Remittance Advice) recording it. The FIRA is your proof that the money is export income, which matters for GST and income tax.
- Choose the right code. Software developers usually use P0802 (software consultancy and implementation). Marketing, design and other services have their own codes; pick the one that matches your work.
- On Payoneer, set the purpose code in your profile settings under additional details. Payoneer provides e-FIRA documents for free.
- Save every FIRA with your invoices. You'll need them for your GST returns and if the tax department ever asks.
9. GST on foreign clients
- Exports are zero-rated. Services to clients outside India, paid in foreign currency, carry 0% GST.
- Registration is required once your aggregate turnover crosses ₹20 lakh in a financial year (₹10 lakh in special category states). Some freelancers register earlier because clients ask for a GSTIN.
- File an LUT every year. A Letter of Undertaking, filed before the financial year starts, lets a registered freelancer export without paying IGST upfront.
- Get paid on time. Under an LUT, payment has to arrive within the RBI's permitted period.
GST rules have many details, so it's worth a one-time conversation with a chartered accountant when you approach the threshold.
10. Income tax for freelancers
The Income-tax Act 2025 replaced the 1961 Act from 1 April 2026, so 2026-27 is the first "tax year" under the new law. The rates didn't change in Budget 2026.
| Taxable income (new regime) | Rate |
|---|---|
| Up to ₹4 lakh | 0% |
| ₹4–8 lakh | 5% |
| ₹8–12 lakh | 10% |
| ₹12–16 lakh | 15% |
| ₹16–20 lakh | 20% |
| ₹20–24 lakh | 25% |
| Above ₹24 lakh | 30% |
- Up to ₹12 lakh of taxable income is effectively tax-free for residents, because a rebate of up to ₹60,000 cancels the tax. Above that, 4% health and education cess applies on top of the tax.
- Presumptive scheme for professionals: if your work is a specified profession (such as engineering, technical consultancy, architecture or other notified professions), you can declare 50% of gross receipts as income without keeping full books. It's now section 58 of the new Act (formerly 44ADA), for receipts up to ₹50 lakh, or ₹75 lakh when cash receipts are 5% or less.
- Example: ₹20 lakh of receipts under the presumptive scheme means ₹10 lakh of taxable income, which is under ₹12 lakh, so a resident with no other income pays no tax.
- Advance tax: presumptive taxpayers can pay it in one instalment by 15 March. Others pay in quarterly instalments.
Whether your work counts as a specified profession isn't always clear for design, writing or marketing, so check with a chartered accountant before relying on the 50% scheme.
11. Scams and mistakes to avoid
Never share your bank, UPI, Payoneer or email password or OTP with anyone, including someone claiming to be support or a client.
- "Work from home" tasks that ask for a deposit, such as liking videos, rating hotels or "prepaid tasks". These are frauds.
- Courses or agents that guarantee income or sell ready-made Fiverr and Upwork accounts. Bought accounts get banned.
- Clients who want to pay outside the platform before you've worked together on it.
- Overpayment tricks, where a "client" sends too much and asks you to return the difference.
- Wrong purpose codes, which can make export income look like something else and complicate your GST and tax.
12. A 30-day starter plan
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| Week 1 | Choose your skill and niche. Study the top sellers and recent job posts in it. |
| Week 2 | Make three to five niche samples and put them online. |
| Week 3 | Open your account with your PAN name, publish your gig or profile, and set up Payoneer with the right purpose code. |
| Week 4 | Apply or promote every day, reply fast, and deliver your first orders carefully. |
| After your first payment | Download the e-FIRA, start a simple income and invoice record, and plan for advance tax and GST as you grow. |
Frequently asked questions
How can I start freelancing in India with no experience?
Pick one skill you can already do or learn in a few months, make three to five sample projects, and put them in a simple portfolio. Then open one Fiverr or Upwork account in your own name, matching your PAN, and set up Payoneer or PayPal so you can get paid.
Is Payoneer or PayPal better for Indian freelancers?
Payoneer usually leaves you more. PayPal charges 4.40% plus a fixed fee to receive an international business payment and 3.0% to convert it to rupees. Payoneer doesn't charge for marketplace payments and costs up to about 2% in conversion to an Indian bank. Wise doesn't give individuals in India account details to receive money.
Do freelancers in India need to register for GST?
Only once your aggregate turnover crosses 20 lakh rupees in a financial year (10 lakh in special category states). Services to clients outside India are zero-rated exports, and a registered freelancer can file a Letter of Undertaking (LUT) each year to export without paying IGST.
How much income tax do freelancers pay in India?
Under the new tax regime, taxable income up to 12 lakh rupees is effectively tax-free for residents because of the rebate, and rates above that rise from 15% to 30%, plus 4% cess. Specified professionals can declare 50% of gross receipts as income under the presumptive scheme, now section 58 of the Income-tax Act 2025 (formerly 44ADA), if receipts are up to 50 lakh, or 75 lakh when cash receipts are 5% or less.
What is e-FIRA and why do I need it?
A Foreign Inward Remittance Advice is your bank's record that foreign money came in, with its purpose code. It's your proof of export income for GST and income tax. Payoneer provides e-FIRA for free, and you choose the purpose code, such as P0802 for software consultancy, in your Payoneer settings.
Do I need to pay for a course to start freelancing?
No. Many skills can be learned from free material, and no course can guarantee you work. Be careful with anyone who promises guaranteed income or asks for money to get you jobs or accounts.
