How to start freelancing from Bangladesh in 2026: a step-by-step guide

1. What you need before you start

• Your NID. Fiverr and Upwork verify your identity, and Payoneer, bKash and the government freelancer ID all use it. The name on every account should match your NID exactly.
• A bank account and a bKash account in your own name. Payoneer only sends money to a bKash account with the same name as the Payoneer account. Never use a relative's or friend's account.
• You must be 18 or older. Fiverr requires it to withdraw earnings, and the other platforms have similar rules.
• A laptop or desktop and steady internet. A phone is fine for messages, but most client work needs a computer. A backup connection, such as mobile data, helps when the power or broadband goes out.
• Working English. Most clients write in English. You don't need perfect grammar, but you need to understand a brief and reply clearly.

2. Choose one skill that clients pay for

Beginners often try to learn everything at once. It's faster to pick one skill, get good at it, and add a second one later. Skills that are regularly bought from freelancers include:

Choose the one closest to what you already enjoy or can do. Free tutorials, official documentation and practice projects are enough to reach a first-job level in most of these skills. You don't need an expensive course.

3. Build proof of your work

Clients hire from samples, not certificates. Before you open any account, make three to five sample projects that look like real client work:

• Design a logo and social posts for an imaginary shop, or redesign a local business's menu.
• Build a small website for a made-up clinic or restaurant and put it online.
• Edit a one-minute video from free stock footage with captions.
• Write two blog posts on a topic you know well.

Put them somewhere easy to share: Behance or Dribbble for design, GitHub or a live link for development, Google Drive for writing. You'll add them to your Fiverr gig or Upwork profile.

4. Fiverr, Upwork or direct clients?

Most beginners start with one marketplace and add another later. Fiverr's higher fee buys you buyers who come to you. Upwork keeps less but costs Connects every time you apply. 5. Set up your account the right way

• Use your real name and photo, exactly as on your NID. Identity checks fail when names don't match, and a failed check can lock your earnings.
• Open only one account per platform. Multiple accounts, or buying or renting someone else's account, get accounts permanently banned. Fiverr also lets you link a withdrawal method to only one account.
• Write a specific title. "I will design a modern minimalist logo for your brand" or "WordPress developer: speed fixes and landing pages" beats "Graphic designer" or "Web expert".
• Show your samples in the gig gallery or Upwork portfolio. Real work sells better than claims.
• On Fiverr, offer three clear packages (basic, standard, premium) with exact deliverables and delivery times.
• On Upwork, complete every profile section and set an honest hourly rate. Upwork sometimes declines new profiles in crowded skill categories; if that happens, make the profile more specific and try again later.

6. Win your first client

The first review is the hardest to get. These habits help:

• Reply fast. Buyers often message several freelancers and hire the one who answers first with a clear plan.
• On Upwork, apply to small, recent jobs that match your samples exactly, and write each proposal for that client. Say what you'll deliver, by when, and show one relevant sample. Don't paste the same text everywhere; it wastes Connects.
• On Fiverr, use the words buyers search for in your gig title, tags and description, and keep your gig active and your response time low.
• Tell people you know. Friends and relatives abroad, local businesses and your LinkedIn contacts can become your first direct clients.
• Over-deliver on the first few orders. A strong early review matters more than the first few dollars.

It can take a few weeks to land the first order. Keep improving your samples and profile while you wait.

7. Price your work

Start a little below experienced sellers in your category, not at the very bottom. Very cheap prices attract the most demanding clients and are hard to raise later. Remember that fees come out of your price:

• On Fiverr, a $50 order leaves you $40 before withdrawal. Your buyer pays $56.25, because Fiverr adds a 5.5% service fee plus $3.50 on orders under $200.
• On Upwork, a $50 job leaves you about $45 at a typical 10% fee.

8. Get paid in Bangladesh

PayPal isn't available to Bangladesh residents, and Wise doesn't let them open an account to receive money. Payoneer is the standard route: Fiverr, Upwork and many direct clients can pay into it.

9. Tax rules for freelancers in Bangladesh

• IT and IT-enabled services income is tax-exempt from 1 July 2024 to 30 June 2027, as long as it comes in through banking channels.
• Other freelancing: the 2026-27 budget proposed extending the exemption to all freelancing and to independent content creators. Check the published Finance Act for the final wording.
• The tax-free income limit for 2026-27 is ৳4,00,000, and the lowest rate above it is 10%.
• If you have a TIN, you must file a return every year, even when all your income is exempt. List freelance income as exempt. You can get an e-TIN free at secure.incometax.gov.bd and file at etaxnbr.gov.bd.
• Cash incentive: individual freelancers exporting software or IT-enabled services can claim 2.5% for 2026-27 (down from 4%) through the bank where the foreign earnings arrive.

10. Get the government freelancer ID

Since January 2026, the ICT Division and the Department of ICT run freelancers.gov.bd, the official platform for freelancer registration and ID cards. The ID is meant to make it easier to access banking services, loans, incentives and training.

• Who can apply: anyone with an NID who has at least USD 50 of verified freelance income in the last 12 months.
• Documents: both sides of your NID (image, up to 500 KB), a photo of exactly 300 × 300 pixels (up to 500 KB), and proof of income as a PDF (up to 2 MB), such as a Payoneer or platform earnings statement.
• Cost and validity: free, and valid for three years. Renewal needs the same USD 50 minimum.

Apply after your first paid job, once you can download an earnings statement.

11. Scams and mistakes to avoid

Never share your Payoneer, bKash or bank PIN, password or one-time code with anyone, including someone who says they're from support or a client.

• Courses or agents that guarantee income or promise to get you "approved accounts". No one can guarantee work, and bought or rented accounts get banned.
• Clients who ask to pay outside the platform before you've worked together on it. It's against Fiverr and Upwork rules, can get your account closed, and removes your payment protection.
• "Clients" who send you money or a cheque and ask you to send part of it back. This is a common fraud.
• Jobs that ask you to pay first, for "training", "software" or a "registration fee".
• Using someone else's name or account for Payoneer or bKash. Names must match, and mismatches freeze money.
